Planning our next load, we discovered that we would have a little extra time to have fun. So, we parked our rig at a truck stop in Kearny New Jersey and paid $24 for 24 hours of parking. We only used 20 of those hours, but asking for a partial refund would be absurd.
After getting our phones fully charged and taking a necessary nap, we embarked on a small hike to the nearest bus stop. If you have followed our blogs for very long, you will discover that we enjoy going on adventures wherever we are. Taking public transportation is always a memorable experience.
In spite of faulty directions from Google maps, we still managed to get to the pier where the ferries take off. Fare was eight dollars each to ride the fast boat to lower Manhattan. Stephanie took lots of pictures as we cruised through the harbor, getting glimpses of the Statue of Liberty. We disembarked at Pier 11, under the impressive shadows of the New York City skyscrapers.
Being on a tight budget, we did a lot of walking and picture snapping. Perhaps someday we will be able to return and take a double-decker bus tour, or even a full harbor tour aboard a boat.
Walking around lower Manhattan was an extraordinary olfactory experience for me. The food carts had the most delicious smells emanating from them. We have a couple of slices of pizza shortly after we started our walk around lower Manhattan. If you hours later, we indulged in hotdogs from a Sabrett cart.
Stephanie's excitement about where we were visibly bubbled over. It brought me great satisfaction to see her so happy. She took nearly 100 pictures and absorbed everything she could. This is the one you want to go on a tourist experience with!
Among the significant places we visited were: the World Trade Center Memorial; New York Stock Exchange; The First American Federal Building; and Battery Park.
Returning to New Jersey was a little more challenging than it was from the opposite direction. Directions from Google maps was horrible! We did our best and asked directions when necessary and eventually succeeded. Our trip back did not include the ferry; we opted to ride two crowded subway trains back to the bus terminal in New Jersey. While feeling a little claustrophobic, Stephanie appreciated the experience.
We got back to the truck stop in Kearny New Jersey just before sunset. My phone died during the bus trip in Jersey City. It was a wonderful day, filled with memorable experiences.
