La Grande, Oregon
The new year is here for everyone on planet Earth. Welcome to 2013. I brought in the new year as I was driving across I-84 in Idaho. My wife called to wish me a happy new year. The boys stayed up until just a few minutes past midnight, then fell directly to sleep. I ended my work shift & handed over the keys in Boise, Idaho around 2am.
Several hours later, my partner woke me up to tell me that the interstate was shut down prior to Oregon's Cabbage Mountain. Snow & ice made the mountain pass extremely dangerous, prompting the authorities to close the roadway to traffic. There had already been two serious accidents since the fatal bus crash, two days ago, on Deadman's Pass, descending into Pendleton. After the highway had been reopened, my partner & other truck drivers dared only 20mph, as the lingering black ice continued to make the route a deadly choice.
I slept well, not worrying about anything I didn't have control over. My partner delivered our load to the Walmart distribution center in Hermiston, Oregon. I leisurely got out of bed & had a modest breakfast after we had crossed in over into Washington state.
My wife & boys are staying at Grandpa Bailey's house until Friday. Grandpa wanted them to stay there while he was/is away in Oklahoma. Their normal living situation (her parents house) is crowded & stressful. Her sister's family lives there as well. Mark can't seem to keep a job, despite his good work ethic. Plus, several relatives children spend the majority of their day there also. There is seldom a quiet moment. It's been good for Regina & the boys to get away &enjoy some of their own space at Grandpa's house. We are so looking forward to being able to afford a place of our own later this year. We've been in this situation for several years as we've been paying down debt & medical bills.
