FLORIDA

Orlando - at the Schneider drop yard

I didn't get a chance to grow weary of the snow & chilly temperatures, before we got sent down to Florida on a FedEx load. But, I'll be content to bask in the warmth just the same.

Traffic was heavy, at times, during my drive from Pennsylvania. Lots & lots of families were on their way back home from their various Christmas gathering places. Nearly everyone drove safely & courteously, which pleasantly surprised me - maybe that was partially due to the increased visibility of State Troopers. Snow & ice had been thoroughly cleared from the roadways. The Waze app screen was heavily populated with other users. I gave & received thanks for hazard & jam alerts during my drive.

I went to bed at 4am this morning. Our usual 2am driver swap was delayed by a the usual lack of truckstops south of Washington DC. I didn't mind driving a little later than usual. We had been parked for several hours at the Hagerstown, Maryland FedEx hub. It's always our goal to keep the work load & hours balanced with each other.

After delivering our load to the FedEx Orlando hub, I was assigned to drive to the Schneider drop yard, five miles away. After unhooking from my empty trailer, I drove around the yard looking for the loaded trailer I was assigned to pick up & take to Arkansas. There are only 30 trailers here & my trailer was nowhere to be found. I called our support staff to report this problem. While on the phone, I walked to every trailer, examining the paperwork in each nosebox. Bingo!...eventually. The third from the last trailer in the yard had the paperwork matching my assignment. It's trailer number didn't even resemble the one I was given. The relaying drivers made a bad clerical mistake. The overnight dispatcher was glad my detective work yielded good results, but she warned me that getting the computers updated would take a while. I can't exit the remotely-monitored gate unless this specific trailer is assigned to me. The security people don't make exceptions.

So, here I sit, making good use of my time. There's always a few good things one can do while waiting. Blogging is one of them.
