SAFE & DRY

Salem, Illinois
Monday night/ Tuesday morning

Victor just took over driving. He'll be delivering our load of paper to the Davenport area in about 6 hours.

Superstorm Sandy continues to ravage the East Coast. We have been keeping moderate attention to the news tonight. 6.5 million customers are without poet according to the latest CNN tweet. Truck drivers are reporting high wind & power outages as far inland as Detroit. I have made it a point to keep our fuel tanks & related fluids topped off - just in case the dark ages visit somewhere we are doing business at.

My work day started in an Alabama town, near the Georgia border. We picked up 6 giant rolls of paper. As we line up to exit, I let a competing company's truck merge in front of me. He didn't pay attention to where his trailer axles were tracking as he eased around the corner & stopped to wait for the line to move ahead. I forcefully prompted Victor to jump out of our truck to alert the driver of his impending disaster if he continued any further. In the nick of time, Victor got him to stop before his trailer fell into a steep ditch.

My route took me through Atlanta. The wind blew hard all the way through Georgia. My heavy load helped keep my rig centered in my own lane - unlike several others. The radar proximity manager on this truck has been a headache sometimes, but I'm getting used to it. I can't believe it brakes on its own when a car cuts in front of me.

Deer carcasses have litters Illinois interstates this evening. Having been in a recent encounter with one of them, I've been extra cautious & appreciating other trucks who choose to drive faster than I do. Let them clear the path, I say.

I shared some freeze-dried chicken& rice with Victor this afternoon. It was delicious, but could have used some hot sauce.
