PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA
I opened my curtains this morning (Friday), to find my co-driver struggling to get to our customer. We had been there on several previous occasions, but not with heinous construction blocking our way. The company – provided directions were of no flexibility in this situation. My iPhone's GPS app came in very handy, but we were directed to routes that were certainly not made for 18 wheelers.
It was noon, and I took over driving from that customer.
Our next load was scheduled for midnight, with 200 miles to get there. Yay, more waiting. So, I drove a while, then spent several hours at our fuel stop location, while a thunderstorm raged.
At the shipper's yard, my co-driver woke up. It was almost his scheduled time to take over. He did the outdoor work, while I maneuvered the truck & did computer work. Just as we were ready to roll with our loaded trailer, I discovered that our brakes were frozen. It was 70 degrees outside, but the trailer brakes were stuck. Odd.6 I was dreading the process of tapping on every brake drum in a feeble attempt to fix things on m own, but success greeted me on my first kneel with the hammer. Yessss!
I drove another 45 minutes, through Columbus, before finding a travel plaza to hand the reins over to my partner. It was a satisfactory day on the road.
