SOCCER SATURDAY

I hadn't been to any of my boys' soccer practices or games until yesterday. Regina and the boys' uncle, Mark Dever, had sent me pictures, grainy video and verbal accounts of the boys' experiences and performance during the prior month.
They said that my four year old wasn't very participatory; they were spot-on about that. There wasn't anything we could say or do to get him onto the field yesterday. He was not going to play. Absolutely not. His coaches made every reasonable attempt they could with him. He felt zero incentive to play. Little Forest just wanted to be with Daddy. It was slightly embarrassing for me, but I knew that every child has these moments occasionally.

A few hours later, it was Hunter's turn to engage in some competition. He and his team had professional pictures taken of them, individually and as a team. Hunter did alright out on the field. He was assigned to different defensive positions during the course of the game. He didn't have many opportunities to make contact with the ball, since his team was so much better coached and aggressive than the other team. Hunter's team easily won the game, but I was hoping for a little more engagement, so I could have seen my boy perform.

By chance, both of my boys' teams wear gray uniform shirts. Since both of my boys are so close in size and appearance, Regina used fabric paint to write their names to the backs of their shirts. She did a good job.
