The freight company known for their brown trucks & brown uniforms received our orange trailer right on time today, and safely. I even remembered to wear my own reflective safety vest while I was on their property. As I meandered my way inside, I noticed a member of management performing duties at a table set up in the dispatch office. He pulled each incoming driver aside to mention bits of rough news, and to speak about safe driving habits. There has been a rash of severe accidents among their drivers in recent days, including one that shut down an Interstate just a few hours prior.
I bobtailed out of "Brown's" yard to wait for an empty trailer location assignment. This particular customer also has a culture of not emptying trailers until they absolutely must. So, in a nearby dirt lot I found another truck bearing the same stripes and lettering as my own. The team was a husband-wife pair. They were eager to talk about their recent trip and delivery. Just the usual shop talk. It's always satisfying to meet another team, especially a pair who are as passionate about what they do as I am.
I easily found my empty trailer and showed up at my shipper's massive yard. They were running behind, so I used the opportunity to read some more of my book and eat another clementine. I eventually got moving with the pleasantly light load, and didn't stop for anything but fuel for the next 6 hours. We might make on-time delivery yet.
I got to spend more time than usual on the phone with my 7 year old son today. He didn't have the television on to divide his attention today, since he got into a little bit of trouble recently.
