I heard and felt my co-driver stop at our company yard in West Memphis. Knowing that an outgoing mailbox was only steps away, I got dressed as quickly as I could and deposited the 14 postcards I had written last night. Since I was in there.....that bacon sure smelled good, and the coffee was mighty tempting also. After washing up in the men's room I got a to-go box of biscuits and gravy, grits and bacon. And I got a 16oz cup of their delicious coffee. I was glad that my co-driver saw me while I was in there. I wouldn't want him to drive off without me. I did, however, leave the bunk curtains wide open as a sign to him that I wasn't in the truck. You know, if I did happen to get left behind somewhere, West Memphis is the place I would prefer the incident to occur. Just like, if I were to be hit by a car, let's get it done by a hospital or fire station!
So, last night I wrote that we were in the middle of a long loading delay. My co-driver got up at 11:30pm. We talked a while. I retired to the bunk a little after midnight, and fell asleep much sooner than I expected. When they finally started loading us, it was about 3:30am. They finished up around 4:30. I woke just enough to remind my co-driver to contact our company to inform them that we would not be able to pick up the following load on time. We were quickly taken off of that load. Communication is critical in this business ~ timely communication.
I knew that today was Veteran's Day, but I asked the fuel desk attendant if the mail had been picked up. Silly question, but not too silly for a fella who just woke up.
