Since the company computers were going to be down for the entire night, and I had far exceeded the time limit (2hours) for parking at the tollway oasis, I shuttled our rig over to the Petro Stopping Center, in Rochelle, Illinois - 18 miles away. (I need to remember to ask my boss to compensate us for those miles).
Finding a designated parking space was nearly impossible, but I did manage to squeeze into a tight spot that required careful blind-side backing. Nobody else dared attempt this one. I got out of my truck four times, during the process, to make sure I didn't make an angry neighbor by scraping his/her rig. After completing my post-trip inspection, I walked over to the big building to pass the time while my co-driver slept. Whenever the truck is parked, the "active" driver always tries to spend as little time as possible inside the cab - to minimize disturbances for the sleeping partner.
Mr. H got up earlier than usual. (1am). He discovered me dozing off in a movie theater seat. Nothing was playing on the screen, so I had a podcast playing from my iPhone through its earbuds. Apparently it was a pretty boring science lecture. Since the sleeper was now empty, I decided to go out to the truck to ride the sleepiness wave.
I woke up at the company operating center (OC), in Gary, Indiana. Obviously, the dispatch system had come back online overnight. Mr. H swapped our empty trailer for a loaded one. I continued to lay in bed for another hour or more. It didn't matter to me where we were going, so long as we WERE going. I concluded my slumber around noon, getting dressed & putting my bedding away. Mr. H pulled into a truckstop right as I tied my shoes & opened the curtain. His need for a break nicely coincided with my timing.
It's a beautiful day in Illinois. Spring is finally here. As usual, I don't disclose my destination until we actually arrive there, or for some time later.
