COLUMBIA, SC

Monday night. (Early morning hours of Tuesday)

About 24 hours ago, I was marveling at how smooth I-75 got as I entered Ohio from Michigan. I had delivered my Technicolor load an hour earlier, then promptly picked up my relay trailer from the Schneider yard. It was good to be back in motion & free of the responsibility of guarding $3million worth of DVD movies.

I delivered our load of packaging to the Kimberly-Clark plant in Beech Island, South Carolina this afternoon. We had to wait four hours for our next dispatch. Our next load will be ready for us to pick up at 8am, 185 miles away. Good freight continues to be elusive, even though we should be entering the Christmas freight season.

My hunger made the decision over where to end my work shift. I struggled to back into one of the few remaining parking spots at the Flying J, in Columbia. With a Denny's inside, an appetite can't go wrong. I had one of my favorite meals - tilapia ranchero dinner. No panhandlers bothered me during my walk from the truck to the building. This was a first. Then, I saw why - a vigilant security guard. He is worth every dollar they are paying him to run the riffraff off. Goodness, I have stories...

My four-year-old son, Forest, is really looking forward to his upcoming birthday. We are going to make it special, yet keep it low-key this year. We'll probably invite family over to Godfathers Pizza & give him the wagon he's always wanted.
