Des Moines, Iowa @ Pilot Travel Center
At 4:30, this afternoon, Victor arrived. I was walking back to my truck with a cup of coffee. He stopped 15 feet short of the keypad, in hopes that I knew the code to let both of us into Schneider's secure section of the Pilot Travel Center. After pulling several yards into the secure lot, he paused his truck along side of me & asked if I was Steve. I was surprised to discover that my new co-driver is a Native American man. Our previous conversations hadn't included any hints as to what the other looked like. After he dropped off his trailer, he parked his orange truck next to my gray tractor. I had to move some of my things to a different cabinet to accommodate his refrigerator. We talked as we transferred his things into my rig. As far as I can tell, I'm going to enjoy his personality. He likes to read & is a thinker, even delving into the realm of "woo." Much of our conversation so far has focused on our preferences for how we hope & expect the other to perform, relate & behave during our partnership. Might as well get the potentially abrasive things out of the way quickly. It's his turn to occupy the bunk. I'm hanging out in the tv room, watching "Dillinger." Around 1:30am, I will make sure he's awake, so I can kindly kick him out of the truck. I will be more than ready to log myself into the sleeper. The plan is to get rolling tomorrow afternoon, right after my 70-hour clock has been reset from 34 hours off duty.
My dad has been under observation at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital, as he is making significant changes with his medicine.
Another Greenwalt will be making an entrance into the world this evening. Charity, my cousin Dave's wife, was admitted to the hospital this afternoon, with regular contractions. Her doctor wants to conduct the C-section before labor really starts. The procedure should be underway as I am writing this. I know it's a boy, but don't know which name they have chosen yet.
