We got the new computer software up and running Saturday afternoon. That was shortly followed by a load assignment. My boss called me to make sure everything was working properly and to apologize for the crummy work assignment. The load wasn't scheduled to be ready for pick up until early Monday morning. The freight market for Phoenix was very soft for the Easter weekend.
My co-driver took a taxi to a motel, while I chose to remain with the truck.
I spent the remainder of Saturday afternoon writing out the load information & simulating the computer tasks we would have to perform. I called a friend to ask various questions I had about the system. He and I talked for about 45 minutes that afternoon. I also spent a significant amount of time writing postcards to the various significant people in my life. It's tasks like these that cause me to realize how many genuine friends I have.
Panhandlers visit my window about every 45 minutes that day. I just told them 'no, I'm on a tight budget.' No orneriness this time.
Sunday morning: I woke up with severe allergies. My plans to Skype were dashed, since I looked as bad as I felt. I didn't even feel like talking to my wife and kids very long. Such lethargy and juiciness. My membranes and eyes are feeling much better now.
My co-driver was anxious to get started. He began his Pre-trip inspection at midnight & departed the Flying J twenty minutes later. He relied on me to help him through the new WORKFLOW program, and I relied on a fellow driver to guide me through a few hazy things over the phone & via text messages. Ron Leffler was my "ask a friend" option.
The load is a heavy one. Gatorade. I think I can tell you this one. We guessed at where the trailer axles should be set to (10th hole). Ten minutes later, we scaled the load at the Pilot Travel Center, on the trusty CAT scales. The educated guess was accurate. Hooray! The law allows up to 13,000lbs on the drive axles; 34,000lbs on the tractor axles; 34,000lbs on the trailer axles; and 80,000lbs total.
I'm in bed now. I will probably wake up 550 miles east of here, wherever that may be. We are heading to Dallas.
