I thought it belonged to the flat-bed truck that was passing me. No, the loud bang belonged to me! My trailer's right, rear, outside tire exploded. It has been a while since this has happened; mostly because of cooler, winter weather, and our company's renewed attention to equipment maintenance.
This happened on I-40, just as I had crossed into Tennessee from North Carolina. I pulled over to the entrance ramp of a shuttered weigh station to examine the damage. It seemed that I might be able to limp it to Knoxville, so I resumed my trip, keeping my speed under 55mph. As my tire started to disintegrate, I had to change my plan. I would have to call for service from a dodgy truckstop, in Newport, Tennessee. Getting a service truck to come out here will cost me about 3 hours of down-time. My load will still get to Lima, Ohio on time, but I was really hoping to get there sooner. We are both nearly out of hours for this 8-day period, so we will have to shut the truck down for all of Monday. I'd like to get checked into a motel before midnight. I don't feel like I get my money's worth when I have less than 12 hours to enjoy the privacy & relaxation of my own room.
One week ago, today, we were enjoying lodging and mild weather in Camarillo, California. The mileage has been good, this past week.
