My DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) System started acting up on me yesterday. I drove for several hours with the "check engine" lights on; two of them. Luckily, I made it to the Freightliner repair shop in Troy Illinois before the engine started to reduce my speed. That's called "de-rating". At a certain stage, of the computer will govern my speed at 55 mph; any further stage, it will hobble me to 30 mph.
The Freightliner service center is a large, impressive facility. They have free food, showers, and lots of comforts for waiting drivers.
It was just over 1/2 mile to the motel. I used the situation as an opportunity to accomplish my exercise goals for the day. The MapMyWalk app helps keep me motivated and provides a bragging platform to my friends.
After a meal at Taco Bell and a shower in my room, I didn't waste anytime getting to bed. It was 8:30 in the evening, but I was really tired.
At 3 o'clock this morning, a service technician called me to inform me of the situation. Since my warranty just expired, the work is estimated to cost about $800.
Because this breakdown impacts my delivery, I naturally had to call the good people at Schneider. I was hoping our customer would allow me to deliver five hours late. My hopes were not reality. I have been directed to relay my trailer at the Schneider operating center in Edwardsville Illinois, about 10 miles from here. I think my truck will perform acceptably for that roundtrip. My 10 hour break won't be complete until 23 more minutes. Then, I can start accomplishing that task.
