At the distribution center guard shack, I didn't get waited on for a very long time; the guard was busy receiving phone calls and making outgoing requests with his supervisors. There had been a family emergency and he needed to leave immediately! I overheard him say that he had to go all the way to a Sacramento hospital, where an elderly relative was being treated for unspecified injuries. He was also scrambling to make sure an older sibling picked up the younger one from daycare. He was hesitant to leave the female guard alone at the busy entrance station, but she assured him she would be okay until new help arrived.
I eventually completed my delivery and pick up an empty trailer. My leaf blower still does an excellent job creating a "foodgrade" trailer. It was a crisp 47° outside, with brilliant sunshine.
My shipper was only 8 miles away. The guard, I could tell, had a hearing impairment, so she talked a little differently. I appreciate when people push hard to overcome their limitations & succeed in the world.
The shipping department did not have my trailer ready to go at the time they had advertised. Looks like I will have to sleep on the property, as my 14 hour clock is expiring. I don't mind getting a little detention pay.
Sleep will be deep and meaningful tonight. Last night, I suffered from a severe case of insomnia.
