I took over the truck driving duties at an automotive parts warehouse in Detroit, Michigan. Very little was going on there, since it was Independence Day. July 4. Getting around Detroit was easy.
The sun was setting as I drove through downtown Indianapolis. Fireworks boomed all around me. The skyline was hazy from the smoke. I enjoy the smell.
I complied with the new 30 minute rest break law at a rest area just west of Indianapolis. I used 16 minutes of that time to walk 1 mile, which I tracked and saved on an iPhone app called Map My Walk.
45 minutes after fueling in Effingham, Illinois, I started to get drowsy. My fresh coffee wasn't helping much. I was thankful that Mr. H got up when he did. We did driver swap about 45 minutes earlier than I was originally intending. We did the post-trip/pretrip routine at a truck stop in Marion, Illinois.
Friday
I had my first look at the daylight at a truck stop in Mount Vernon, Texas. It was 11am. Mr. H was simply stopping for a restroom break. I got up & dressed as quickly as I could. Using the restroom while a worker was replacing a nearby urinal was awkward. After washing my hands, I filled my mug with hot coffee and grabbed a cup of pre-sliced watermelon to include with my breakfast.
We took showers & did driver swap at the Flying J in Dallas. The OC was just around the corner, but we didn't want to go there for fear of not being allowed to exit. Our trailer had an overdue pm. They've been known to detain us before.
Traffic on July 5 was lighter than usual, but the wisdom of my fellow drivers' decisions in traffic had me concerned at various times during my trip down I-35.
