ROUNDABOUTS OF NEENAH

Boy howdy! Neenah, Wisconsin has more roundabouts than any other place I've driven in! They take a little getting used to, but after a while they can really be appreciated. Driving a tractor-trailer through these contraptions can be more challenging than it would be in a car. My rig usually consumes all given lanes in the turns. Most car drivers see this & wisely choose not to attempt to pass me. Drivers must pay closer attention to the posted signs to accurately navigate to their desired roadway. Mistakes are easily mitigated though; just make another circle until you can identify your correct exit, and take it.
I took a walk this evening. Pedestrian crossings aren't too bad. The distances from one "safe" zone to another are generally shorter than they would be in a traditional intersection. There are no crossing signals, but the curvature of the roundabouts does have a slowing effect on traffic. It will be interesting to learn what the safety studies reveal about these traffic control alternatives.
