NOT GETTING FAR

PERRY, MICHIGAN. WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY.
We delivered a load of auto parts to General Motors today. It was noon, according to our logbooks – my turn to take over. I called our boss to see if anything was in the works to get us loaded and on our way down the interstate. There was nothing, but they were trying to find something good for us.

I deadheaded about a mile and found a large shopping mall. It was a great place to spend time while allowing our dispatchers to work. Under such circumstances, I like to wander around for about 45 minutes, then return to the truck to see if an assignment had been sent to our computer. Today, my timing was spot–on. However, the next assignment would not be ready until early Thursday morning. After I had concluded my fun at the mall, I drove 27 miles to the nearest full-service truckstop. My supervisor authorized a "routing point" for my lengthy out of route accommodations.
