2012 has gotten off to a good start for my co-driver and myself, on the trucking world.
We have mostly meandered around the Northeast and Upper Midwest. The majority of our loads have been food products and paper goods.
The weather has been amazingly pleasant everywhere we have been. Sure, there was a little snow on the ground near Buffalo, but the roads were dry, and very little has slowed us down.
My co-driver became ill toward the end of his work shift. Despite my offer to shut the truck down, he encouraged me to make it another average drive day. He jumped out whenever I stopped for scaling or fuel. As midnight approached, he got up as usual. I stopped at a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Van Wert, Ohio and did my post trip inspection. I replaced a headlight while he completed his "morning" rituals. As I tapped away at the onboard computer, he spoke up. For the first time in almost 4 years he confessed to not feeling well enough to safely drive. I promptly asked Siri (the iPhone assistant) where the nearest motels were, and I drove in that direction. Since the motels didn't accommodate trucks, I had to drop him off from the middle turn lane. We have time to spare on the current load, and the next. He is doing the right thing by sitting this shift out.
Except for my partners illness, it has been a good week on the road.
